Jet Airways continued cash-crisis situation is resulting into a capacity shortfall for the overall aviation industry and as per a leading business channel’s report which cited PS Kharola, DGCA secretary who monitors as many as 40 sectors, 10 sectors have been witness to surge in airfares by as much as 10-30%.

Further, the DGCA in its meeting on Tuesday has asked airlines to lower down the fares as much as possible on a priority basis.

“Almost 90% of Jet slots are unused at the moment and they are being allotted to others temporarily,” the ToI report quoted a top aviation bureaucrat as saying. All of the Indian airlines to trade off capacity woes are adding 10 aircraft on a monthly basis and some are also in talks with Jet’s lessors to acquire its re-possessed planes.

Spicejet and Indigo have been expanding their fleet and increasing flights. Spicejet will add 16 Boeing 737 which earlier flew for Jet and also 5 90-seater Q400. At the same time, Indigo by May 10 will operate more flights between Delhi-Mumbai.
